Colby Richardson is a media artist and experimental filmmaker currently based in Winnipeg MB, Canada. Driven by a fascination with obsolete technologies and undesired consumer electronics, his work examines the relationship between technology and progress and aims to draw a connection between obsolescence, death, and spirituality. By utilizing and re-contextualising historic video equipment and other out-of-date technologies, Colby creates dynamic and textural visual works, taking the form of video sculptures, installations, performances, as well as single-channel film and video. His work embraces the potential meditative qualities of abrasive and jarring stimulus, and investigates themes of transformation, escape, progress, and death. Colby has exhibited and screened work across Canada and internationally, including Microscope Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Videofag (Toronto, ON), Antimatter (Victoria, BC), WNDX (Winnipeg, MB), Artists Television Access (San Francisco, CA), Studio Kura (Itoshima, Japan), Flatpack Film Festival (Birmingham, UK), International Video Art Festival Madrid (Madrid, Spain) and at the European Media Art Festival (Osnabrück, Germany).
