Les Thomas: Pixelated
The applied layers of oil paints and oil pastels plays with light over the surface of each painting in this new collection by Alberta artists, Les Thomas. The dots and lines that appear around, under, or on top of the wildlife, melons or Bow River landscapes are his way of “pixelating” the image, reminiscent of a television screen.
Entwining culture, nature, and art, Les Thomas demonstrates how television, computers and wireless devices have affected the way society responds to their environment, including fine art, and are not separated from it. While Les controls the materials he works with, he leaves it to each image to provide direction on how the entire surface of the painting is treated. With the goal to make his work inventive and enjoyable, he provides us with his artistic vision of landscape, animal, and still life.
