Red Deer Arts Council and Red Deer Public Library are pleased to present, Connection: Sculptures by Deb Laninga.
Redwater artist Deb Laninga works in realism to preserve “that moment”; the moment where our humanity shines and is most evident and revealing. Shown throughout her sculptures of the figure and portrait, she creates art that captures a scene that will stay in your mind, a moment where you identify with emotions, memories, family, friends, and community. Deb Laninga’s objective is to offer the audience the time to pause, reflect on what really matters to us, take a deep breath, and remember moments that we cherish or can connect with. The theme “Connection”, her artwork is about celebrating love, connection, self-worth, joy, sacrifice, family, and courage. This is her inspiration and comfort.
From Deb Laninga’s artist statement:
I work in portrait and figure, human and animal. With portraits, I work to achieve not only a likeness but a spark of personality and spirit. I see sculptures in my mind already completed. The reason I sculpt is to take that image and experience the trials and joy in bringing it into existence and out of my imagination. I have seen and experienced deep grief, exploitation, poverty, discrimination, tribal war, and conflict. I have served others, cared for ill family, and traveled widely. But what stands out to me most are moments of love, connection, joy, comfort, sacrifice, and courage. Capturing our humanity in three dimensions and textures is my desire. My recent work celebrates connection. The memories and moments of closeness and comfort that have gotten us through difficult moments. My objective is to offer the audience time to pause, reflect on what really matters to us, take a deep breath, and remember moments that we cherish or can connect with. If it evokes a smile, a chuckle, or just an appreciation of beauty I feel successful as an artist.
