In 2018, I attended ACAD’s materiality residency where I made sculptural, organic shapes for my new work. I also created paintings using repurposed wood and objects cutting out shapes using a bandsaw, sanding and cleaning each piece to combine to the paintings.
When painting my new organic shapes, I consciously adjusted my technical movements with more intuitiveness and stream of consciousness. I used a gauze cloth to apply the oil paint which gave the movement of paint an airy reflective and refracted appearance. This approach to painting was new to me which allowed more freedom that correlates to the new organic shapes.
I believe this process has more truth and honestly in the approach to allow the flow of intuition to make the pigment find its own way on the picture plane. This newness felt very liberating; redeeming, fulfilling and more wholesome. In this state of self-awareness I had a mindset to achieve this goal without encumbrances or mental distractions and found the confidence to paint more freely. - Conrad Ouchi
