Opening: September 20 – October 13, 2024 (in conjunction with BC Culture Days)
“It’s an expression that comes from a little girl [CoCo] as seen through the lens of a remote island and whose eyes were looking beyond the shore to distant lands with fascination and amazement.
The roots from her traditional home followed Coco’s global odyssey through a design aesthetic that is a mixture of those found in distant lands she has visited; Japan, Denmark, Mexico, Germany and the Netherlands.
CocoModern is Gwa’wala – the Raven speaking, seeking enlightenment in a new age of traditional and modern.
CocoModern represents a journey of self-discovery where one’s roots are embraced while exploring new horizons. Through the lens of CoCo’s curiosity and wonder, the collection embodies a harmonious blend of past and present.
By incorporating elements from various cultures, CocoModern creates a unique and diverse visual language that speaks to the new world. Incorporating Japanese minimalism in furniture, creating a serene and harmonious living space that reflects a blend of East and West. Infusing vibrant Mexican colors and patterns, offering a sensory spectacle of diversity and creativity.
CocoModern is Gwa’wala – a journey of awakening. Similar to the Raven seeking wisdom, CocoModern embraces traditional teachings while considering new ways of thinking and creating. It is a celebration of cultural diversity and the beauty of blending different influences to create something truly original.
By fusing both ancient roots and modern influences, CocoModern embodies a spirit of reverence and fascination that speaks to the beauty of our interconnected world. It reminds us of the richness of our heritage and the endless possibilities that arise when we open ourselves to new experiences.
The Raven speaks through me.” – Corrine Hunt 2024
The little girl in this story is Corrine Hunt who is also known by family and friends as “CoCo”. It is her experiences growing up as envisioned through the eyes and ears of the Raven that form the basis of this latest exhibition; CocoModern: Gwa’wala (Raven) Speaks.
It is the tension between the traditional and modern that motivates CoCo to create. While her inspiration is both local and international, she finds the balance between the two with such creativity and beauty.
As she listens closely to Raven, her pursuit of cultural enlightenment and self-discovery enables her to gain the wisdom she so desires to reach new heights in her endeavours.
Since 2015, this show is the fourth in a series of ongoing exhibitions with CoCo and she continues to amaze and delight us with her prolific and astonishing designs. For many years, Corrine Hunt’s works have had a strong following of avid collectors, which pushes her to delve deeper into herself and provide an even more remarkable collection every time.
We are so honoured to continue collaborating with Corrine Hunt and wish to thank her for all the efforts and dedication to her craft that she pours into each and every piece of this exhibition.
