Art Placement is delighted to present the two-person exhibition, CUDDLES, which brings together the work of Joseph Anderson and Shanell Papp, two prairie artists who have connected through shared geographies, academic paths, and overlapping artistic and material interests. Anderson works primarily in illustration, watercolour, and soft sculpture; Papp focuses on photography, drawing, and sculpture that incorporates a variety of textile practices. Both artists strike a balance in their work between the whimsical and the macabre; a seemingly lighthearted playfulness that masks an underlying darkness and horror.
Joseph Anderson's work explores themes around identity, the body, sexuality, horror, and the grotesque, often evoking the tropes and conventions of fairy tales and story-book illustrations.
Shanell Papp maintains a labour intensive art practice, working in textiles, sculpture, photography, and drawing, creating work that blurs and redefines the boundaries between Textile Craft and Fine Art. At times grotesque, horrific and other times painfully funny, Papp’s work mesmerizes with its charming laboured oddness.
