Curtis Talwst Santiago, "Liming," 2020
Liming is a Trinidadian word that means to meet and socialize. Hanging out, gathering and being together can manifest in many ways from formal scheduled events to impromptu meetings with friends or neighbours. Liming features miniature dioramas of basement parties in the artist’s childhood home in Sherwood Park and a dancefloor where visitors can create their own celebrations. As we think of new ways to be together, Liming dreams of and fantasizes about being physically near friends, family and strangers. This exhibition cherishes and revels in human connections. It takes a nostalgic look at the artist’s past but also considers how to take physical connections into a new future and offers new ways to share experiences.
Curtis Talwst Santiago: Liming is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and curated by Lindsey Sharman. The RBC New Works Gallery features new artworks by Alberta artists and continues the Art Gallery of Alberta’s tradition of supporting and promoting Alberta artists.
