“My work has always been nature-based and explores the connection between culture, nature, and people. The mood in my work shifts with what is current in my life and reflects everything from whimsy to grief. With this exhibition, I am trying to hold true to my artistic and cultural influences and tendencies, while at the same time stretch both.
A wild mind is full of creativity. It’s full of motion. It follows its urges. There are times of plenty, times of rest, times of play, and times of struggle. There is a feeling of deep connection. I am deeply influenced by my time on the land in my early years with my family, by my time spent in the community of Tache. It was and continues to be a pretty wild landscape where nature borders human settlement, where cultures clash and mix and mingle into something new and strange, where history informs and often dictates outcomes, but surges of the wild flow through some of us some of the time, bringing about wonderful new things.
My art is a reflection of these ideas, where culture meets nature, where colours collide and move around one another, where the new influences the old and vice versa.” – Damian John, Tl’azt’en artist
