Opening Reception: Friday, May 2nd from 5 to 7 pm, coinciding with the May First Friday art crawl in downtown Whitehorse.

Yukon Artists at Work (YAAW) and the consortium that operates the Jenni House artist residency in Whitehorse are teaming up to present an exhibit that features sixteen recent Jenni House artists.

The show, called Down By the River, opens at YAAW with a reception co-hosted by Yukon Artists at Work and the Yukon Arts Centre. The Arts Centre is one of the organizations that runs the Jenni House program, along with ArtsNet, the Yukon Film Society, Jazz Yukon, and Music Yukon. There’ll also be an off-site part of the exhibition shown on May 3rd at 12 noon at the Yukon Theatre in Whitehorse. The public will have a chance to view the film This Moment Will Be Different by former Jenni House artist Sarah Genge. Genge worked on the documentary during her residency two years ago. The ticket price of this film will be ‘pay what you can’.

“Since the Jenni House program began in 2015, we have been able to offer residencies to about 200 artists from a wide variety of disciplines,” said Janet Patterson, Outreach Coordinator for Jenni House and the curator of this exhibition. “As part of their residency, each artist is required to hold a public engagement event, such as hosting open houses, workshops or participating in the Fireweed Community Market. As a result, more than 6,000 people have interacted with the artists in some way. However this exhibit gives some of the artists an additional opportunity to showcase their work,” Patterson added. The Jenni House artist residency is a year-round program that offers one-month residencies to Yukon and northern circumpolar artists. It takes place in two historic cabins in Shipyards Park in Whitehorse: Jenni House and Chambers House. Yukon Artists at Work is a non-profit organization that hosts a Whitehorse gallery. YAAW frequently collaborates with the local arts community and the broader community at large to promote visual art and to host workshops and exhibitions. Four members of YAAW will have pieces in this show, and the curator is also a member of Yukon Artists at Work. 

Participating artists include: Allison Henry, Andrea Nelson, Danielle d’Entremont, Erin Corbett, Josée Fortin, Kim Edgar, Kersten Christianson, Krystle Silverfox, Larissa Stanley, Linda Leon, Marie-Hélène Comeau, Neil Graham, Nicole Bauberger, Northern Fibres Guild, Sarah Genge, Theresa Roberts.
