"Earbuds & Marigolds" by Rubeena Ratcliffe

“Earbuds & Marigolds is a reflection on the intersection of modern technology and the immersive beauty of the natural world. The title speaks to my studio practice—where earbuds serve as a personal sanctuary, allowing me to escape into music and podcasts. This intimate audio experience helps block out distractions and creates a mental space where creativity can flow freely.

Marigolds, symbolic of creativity and renewal, feature prominently both in theme and color. Their soft yet vibrant hues—ranging from cream, pink, and purple to deep reds and yellows—are infused throughout the series. These colors are not only visual choices but emotional tones, anchoring the work in a palette that reflects growth, transformation, and quiet resilience.

The works in this series explore natural forms and spaces, at times leaning into abstraction and at others referencing still life traditions. Whether portraying a landscape, a floral arrangement, or a distinctive vase, each piece is a meditation on presence—how we find moments of peace, inspiration, and connection through both nature and the quiet rituals of daily life.”
