Works by Alan Lacovetsky and Susan Turner have more in common than may first meet the eye…
Alan Lacovetsky’s pieces are created through the effects of fire and air on clay. He practices an art form tied into the geological history of our planet; turning soft clay into objects of permanence. Clay consists of minute platelets, and as he uses his potter’s wheel to make a bowl or urn, the clay particles align under his hands, gaining strength through that process which allows the final piece to hold its shape.
Susan Turner deals with intangibles in her work, manipulating an image rather than an object. She uses light to transform colour, texture and patterns. With the use of light and digital tools she creates a sense of depth and material permanence where there is none.
Both artists’ work deals with time – rebalancing and centering to restore equilibrium to our inner selves. “Art holds out the promise of inner wholeness.” [de Botton, Alain, Armstrong, John, Art as Therapy, London, Phaidon, 2013, p 34]
