Erin Berry, "Pathologia," 2017
OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY OCTOBER 6th, 7 - 9pm
Pathologia is a series of work focusing on the unseen and microscopic parts of the human body. By way of meticulous embroidery, quilting and video projection, Berry attempts to illuminate the universe that exists underneath our skin. Each piece has an aesthetic attractiveness that under closer examination is subverted by the realization that the magnifications depict cancer, specifically Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It is this tension between beauty and decay, strength and collapse and the known and unknown within the human anatomy that drives her art practice.
Artist's Bio
Erin Berry completed a diploma in Visual Arts from Camosun College in 2012 and is currently in her third year of study at Concordia University, completing a BFA with a Major in Ceramics. She creates sculptural works that can be compared and related to one's own body in form, interaction or size. Berry works in whichever medium suits the needs of her endeavor, whether it is clay, paper, fabric, bronze or found objects. It is important to her that the physical action of making and the materials she is working with speaks to the feeling or concept she is trying to bring to fruition. By way of meticulous embroidery, video projection, cyanotype and ceramic objects, Berry attempts to illuminate the universe that exists underneath our skin. She is fascinated with the mental and physical inner workings of the human body and it is this innate preoccupation that she investigates and dissects in her sculptural practice.
