Opening Reception: Friday, September 8, from 6–9pm The artist will be in attendance
After a five year hiatus, artist Eve Leader makes her debut in a solo-show at South Main Gallery. Masterfully combining figuration and abstraction, in her oil on Mylar works, Leader paints about the human condition. Taking from a quote of the American architect Louis Kahn that states "good architecture makes the intangible tangible to evoke the intangible.” she does just that.
Eve Leader pieces evoke the mystery of life. In her words,
I paint about the human condition, about the mystery of life. About the tantalizing fact that we have only intimations, but will never know, the nature of reality. About the illusion that life is secure whereas in fact anything could happen at any time to change its course. About loss, fragility, old age, and mortality.
My work does not refer to literal history. I do not place the figures in any particular setting, nor do I paint the world around me, but rather the interior world. The works are meant to convey emotion; ultimately they are about states of mind.
I try to capture that moment of bewilderment when structure and order in our existence break down, everything looks unfamiliar, and we are sure of nothing.– Eve Leader
In her sometimes somber palette, feelings of loss, fragility, old age, and mortality surfaces. The figures in her work are often androgynous, and not recognizable as a particular person. Rather, they represent what confronts in our human condition. "I am not interested in painting the body in a realistic manner, but rather in finding a way to represent it so that it resonates more deeply with the viewer.", says Leader.
Eve Leader graduated in painting from Emily Carr in 1993. She has shown her work in many Canadian cities and is a part of international collections in the USA, Australia, and France.
