Feminist Land Art Retreat, "Free Rein," 2018
production still, Courtesy the artist.
Opening reception and artist talk on May 30th from 7-9 PM.
FLAR formed in 2010, in Vancouver and was born from a desire to retreat from the city / artwork and gather an intergenerational group of women artists together, to think through questions of authorship, female experience and solidarity, and accountability in the art world.
FLAR was first articulated in the form of a 1960’s protest inspired poster advertising a retreat in Elaho Valley on Labour Day weekend.
The retreat, still unrealized, has since evolved into a larger ongoing project. The artists describe FLAR as, “a vehicle, a dialogue, a way to get outside of ourselves, to do research and ask uncomfortable questions.”
For Free Rein, Audain Gallery has co-produced a new video installation that will premiere at the gallery entitled No Man’s Land. This work re-stages the tropes of the Western film genre from a feminist perspective to challenge the mythology of the ‘Wild West’ as an uninhabited territory for the taking. Filmed in Heffley Creek, BC; Galisteo, New Mexico; and Berlin, Germany, this three-part film positions the land, the horse, and the woman rider as equally important and active agents, to propose alternative ideas of freedom and sovereignty.
This exhibition marks the second iteration of an ongoing project that was first presented at ACUD Gallery, Berlin.
Audain Gallery will be transformed into an arena that will house multiple film screens and installation works.
FLAR will discuss their work during the opening reception on Wednesday, May 30 from 7 - 9pm.
On Saturday, June 23 at 1pm, curator Amy Kazymerchyk will lead an exhibition tour.
A gathering at SFU Gallery in Burnaby titled, “Retreat: No Person’s Land” will be held on Sunday, June 24 from 10am - 7pm.
A screening of films that have influenced FLAR will take place at DIM Cinema at The Cinematheque on Wednesday, July 18 at 7pm.
