As the proliferation of manufactured objects persists, it is of increasing importance that we understand and appreciate handmade objects. Through its recognition of excellence in the applied Arts and Design, The Carter Wosk BC Creative Achievement Award ensures that objects of superlative design and fabrication are identified, allowing us to further understand the beauty, relevance, and significance of craft practice and the handmade object; and to appreciate the creative ingenuity and skill of craftspeople.
The exhibition focuses on works that involved the use of heat and fire in the process of their creation. We are exhibiting a concise collection of ‘fire works’ of enduring beauty and excellent design, created by craftspeople, each with their own particular approach to their medium.
With a focus on objects made from what can be considered traditional craft media, forms represented in this exhibition may far surpass notions of ‘traditional’. Concepts of ‘form’ and ‘function’ are often synonymous with ‘craft’, and the objects presented in FIREWORKS illustrate true excellence with regard to both form and function.
