Floyd Elzinga, "Rooted," 2019
steel, 23" x 30" x 3"
Floyd Elzinga began his art career in grade 1 by trading a drawing of an elephant for a lunch snack. Combining influences from the Group of Seven with inspiration from the 1960’s Land Art movement, Elzinga’s art explores the physical properties of steel – its malleable, plastic and forgiving nature, its range of colours and textured surfaces to create a contemporary series of sculptural Canadian landscapes.
"Trips to the mountains are a weekly venture in Winter to ski, and my Spring, Fall, and Summer are filled with riding, running, and hiking the hills. I am working on incorporating this physical knowledge - the flow of the landscape - into this work.Normally, I don't use reference material but it has been a fun challenge to bring my twist to landscape painting...I start with an image and crop it it the shape of panel I working with. That becomes the bones. Like my regular work, I am building up layer upon layer. I am super excited about how the polishing creates an incredible finish - this surface erosion acts like Mother Nature." - Peter Wyse
