Fran Schlosser Presents “Obsessed with Lily Whyte”
“To paint the same face and figure over and over has to be an obsession. But what an obsession! This face is so many faces- so many personas… so many stories. “It’s only smoke and mirrors…”as Ms. Whyte is fond of saying.
Lily Whyte has the ability to draw you into the story.
A story that I would like to communicate even further by painting some of my pieces in a pulp fiction style, another level to become part of that telling of the story. Pulp fiction began in the war times when a shortage of materials led book makers to use “pulp” to make the paper, a poor quality paper that would not allow the ink to adhere well- the paper absorbed the inks – which led to the artists using intense colours in their artworks for the covers.
Clearly the fascination of another era is something that Lilly and I have in common, the love of clothing and costumes, the ability for a good story to transport one into another world, a fictional character that can be identified with, that I can project my own story onto, and get lost in. It’s why we watch movies and read books.
I am completely smitten with the inspiring images of this powerful, magical, female body and the many faces of Lily Whyte…now the viewer can be smitten with this integration of performance and paint and bring their own story to it. And we can all be obsessed with Lily Whyte.
