Newzones, "FreshFaces," 2019
“FreshFaces” is a curated exhibition which brings together select artists from North America for a one-time group showing. “FreshFaces” will highlight exciting artists and their varying practices, providing a stimulating and fresh view of “New to Newzones” and “New to Calgary” talent.
Artists included:
Erin Armstrong: A contemporary figurative artist working and living in Toronto, Armstrong’s work investigates the human imagination as it
is expressed visually. She draws on the genre of portraiture as a foundation for these explorations.
George Byrne: Originally from Australia and now based in L.A., Byrne creates large-scale photographs that depict everyday surfaces and landscapes as painterly abstractions. Borrowing from the clean, vivid clarity of modernist painting, he also references the New Topographics photography movement via a subject matter firmly entrenched in the urban everyday.
Sarah Gee Miller: Based in Vancouver, Miller is a collagist and a painter. Her work is largely concerned with clarity, equilibrium, and the
expressive possibilities of vibrant color. Miller’s artistic focus is in the implications of totemic signage and the formalities of hard-edged abstraction.
Jean-Francois Provost: Based in Outaouais, Provost’s paintings are described by some as lyrical abstraction, having evolved into a series of works exploring specific formalist concerns. His artwork is based on the study of composition in terms of line, depth, relationships between masses, gestures, and trompe-l’oeil.
Janna Watson: As a painter, Watson uses abstraction as both an escape from and return to the real. As the world we know de-materializes into paint strokes, so too does her paint take stage as its very own character in a multi-act drama of composition. Watson is based in Toronto.
“FreshFaces” is curated by Sabrina Sullivan, Assistant Director of Newzones.
