Channeling the worlds of ritual and alchemy, Vancouver’s favourite late-night art party returns Friday, November 10 to present an artful evening of magic, spell and ceremony.
Become part of the coven at FUSE: A Conjuring, a night of unexpected happenings and surprise encounters—from artist bars to live performances, music and dance. Featuring artists from across the country, FUSE: A Conjuring will create a lively environment where FUSE-goers can cast a desirous and contemplative gaze into how artists’ materials and processes create a magical art experience.
Transmitting late into the evening, a selection of musicians and sound artists from the electronic label Generowill offer an evocative four-hour set. Genero artists include Kaifeng-born, Vancouver-based musician and DJ, Yu Su; Minimal Violence, who are known for their drum heavy and acid-tinged live sets; Hick, an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on surreal, fantastic, absurd and alchemical visions and sounds; and founder of Genero, Soledad Muñoz, who will collectively join forces to enliven the Gallery’s rooftop pavilion.
From disruptive performances to unusual karaoke numbers, Small Practices of Deep Looking has artists and musicians respond to and offer their unique perspective on individual works from the Gallery’s fall exhibitions. Participating artists include Tsēma Igharas, Stephen Murray, Simranpreet Anand and Stacey Ho.
Under candlelight and a sea of velvet, an unabashedly mischievous and decidedly delicious coming together of art, wine and community will gather at one of FUSE’s pop-up bars by the Toronto-based Grape Witches—two sommeliers and wine educators driven to share magical wines without pretense. And at the Shadow Bar, guests will be entertained in a room of projected shadows and reflections that have been designed by Vancouver-based artist Erika Lövgren Holt. Drawing upon the storied history of hidden things, Holt invites FUSE-goers to get lost in the shadows.
Additionally, in Painting as Ritual, artist Kate Barry and dancer/actor MichaelAnn Connor will deliver an engaged, in-depth lecture on the history of painting, taken and stretched-out into unforeseen territory. Also animating the evening, dancers Rianne Svelnis and Kelly McInnes will perform Rolling Boil, a collaborative dance—at once a gathering, a conjuring and a ritual. With the help of the audience as witnesses, the performers will complete their creative spell through the transformative power of dance.
And back at FUSE by popular demand, and in collaboration with Microsoft, guests will be absorbed into an augmented reality experience through an interactive, holographic mask designed by Shawn Hunt, a Heiltsuk artist from Waglisla (Bella Bella), BC.
Fuse: A Conjuring is curated by cheyanne turions, Director of Education and Public Programs at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
During the evening, all four floors of the Gallery’s current exhibitions will be on view:
