Gary Lee-Nova: Oblique Trajectories
An important figure in the West Coast Scene of the 1960s and early 1970s, Lee-Nova is known for creating single projects that often take years to execute, examining systems of colour, measurement and language. The exhibition presents works from over fifty years, including large-scale paintings, sculpture, collage, silkscreen and digital compositions.
The exhibition includes Out to Metric, a sculpture which was originally created in 1975 for an exhibition at the Burnaby Art Gallery. Made from more than 1400 wooden yardsticks, it was built as Canada switched from the Imperial to the metric system. The work replicates the corner of a room, giving the feel of an architect’s cut-away drawing. Motifs of measurement recur through other works, extending to recent digital works on paper. Lee-Nova’s explorations of the famous comic character Nancy, as well as large, multi-coloured canvases, make this exhibition an optical delight.
Enhanced cleaning procedures and safety protocols at the Burnaby Art Gallery will ensure visitors can continue to connect with culture safely. All visitors must follow safety signage and staff directions at all times and are asked to postpone their visit if they are feeling sick.
