Gillian Willans creates paintings of houses and interiors that reflect her personal history and interest in the development of genre scenes in painting. Sourced from found black and white photographs, Willans is deeply invested in the emotive potential of light and colour. Somewhere between museum displays and theatrical stage sets, the domestic imagery is both nostalgic and critical, steeped in questions of gender and familial constructs.
“I am painting scenes that have multilayered narratives informed by idealism and nostalgia found in second hand books, magazines and photographic documents, nostalgia for something that never was.” - Gillian Willans
