"Grasping at the Roots," 2020
Don't miss the opening reception of Grasping at the Roots at the Mitchell Art Gallery on Thursday, January 16 from 7 - 9 p.m.
Curated by Christina Battle, Grasping at the Roots features new work by Debbie Ebanks Schlums, Serena Lee, Eugenio Salas and Shawn Tse, with recent video by Scott Portingale. Taking cues from mycorrhizae, mutually beneficial associations between fungi and plants, this exhibition examines strategies artists use to support and sustain relationships with those they work with, and also curatorial strategies that might in turn better support artists.
Join us on March 4 in the gallery for an evening of community development as amiskwacîwâskahikan/Edmonton-based artist, filmmaker and educator, Shawn Tse leads a public sharing circle to discuss his work, Connecting Overseas: Safe & Secure (2019—), and the larger implications of the Hong Kong protest.
And don't miss Merienda (teatime) organized by Eugenio Salas on March 20. In addition to his work in our current exhibition, Salas has collaborated with a local immigrant baker to provide another opportunity for audiences to engage in the complex political histories of food and food production.
