Opening Reception: Friday, May 9, 2025 | 6 to 8 pm
In this new site-specific work, artist José Luis Torres explores the relationship between location, materials, and the viewer. His practice involves appropriating space and materials from everyday life, often using spontaneity and accumulation to reflect themes of survival, workforce, and ready-made objects. Through playful, evolving environments, Torres challenges conventional exhibition standards and the idealized image of the artist. HANDMADE focuses on the paradoxical value of objects as both fundamental and incidental, using construction and deconstruction to explore their identity and engages with the site’s cultural and social context.
José Luis Torres is an Argentine artist based in Québec City since 2003. He holds degrees in visual arts, sculpture, and architecture. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including at Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Museum London, and the UCCS Gallery of Contemporary Art. His art explores the fluid and evolving nature of immigrant identity.
