Hanna Yokozawa Farquharson, "Threads of Life"
Hanna Yokozawa Farquharson immigrated from Japan to Saltcoats, Saskatchewan in 2011. Once she settled into her new home, Hanna began making textile art, blending imagery from rural Saskatchewan with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi – an embracing of the aesthetic beauty of the incomplete or imperfect.
By reimagining Japanese kimonos and kimono sashes (obis), Gaia Symphony invites the viewer to consider their resonance and presence on earth through myriad of senses. The works in this exhibition use vintage kimonos, including the artist’s mother's and great aunt’s, carefully taken apart and reconstructed.
“This exhibition invites the viewer to listen to the symphony played by Gaia, our planet earth,” Yokozawa Farquharson writes. “Viewing this presentation of Gaia with our eyes, we are enabled to hear the music of Gaia as if with our ears and ultimately our inner being.”
