Arts Commons showcases three unique exhibits in the Window Galleries this September 4 - November 27 from artists Chloe Kinsella, Haley Craw, Natalie Lauchlan, and Pamela Norrish.
The Event Pictured explores the interruption of nature by the human form. “I am of the position that human intervention is detrimental and yet inherent in most of us,” says Kinsella. “These shrouded figures become human pavilions trying in vain to blend into their environment.”
Haley Craw’s Fallen tackles the mythology of the fallen woman using stained symbols of purity to break down themes of guilt, shame, and supressed desire. Including a wine-stained shroud in reference to the shroud of Turin, Craw’s performance presents a woman arched in hysteria, evoking women who have been oppressed and removed from religious mythology.
V is a series of drawings documenting a three-hour endurance performance piece of the same name by artist Natalie Lauchlan, performed Espace Cercle Carré in Montréal. These drawings relate to the artists understanding of documentation, time, and memory and the role of an artist in controlling the documentation of a performance.
Past by Pamela Norrish explores the artists’ interest in altering objects and images from the past to re-contextualize and change their inherent meaning. “By editing images attached to real experiences I can literally cut out the parts that I do not want to remember,” says Norrish. “In doing so I am surprised by what is revealed and all of the things that I had not originally noticed.”
