Herald Nix in the Viewing Room
TrépanierBaer Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of Herald Nix.
Herald Nix is known primarily for his series of landscape paintings. These intimate works are small windows into the quiet and lush landscape of the North Okanagan region near Salmon Arm, British Columbia, where Herald Nix works and lives. He revisits the same locations - most often at the Shuswap Lake - and repeatedly depicts them. With each iteration, the artist interprets the topic anew, capturing the atmospheric subtleties of colour, light, shadow, weather, and the seasons. This gesture of repetition recalls Monet's series Haystacks, and Cézanne's repeated depictions of Mont Sainte-Victoire in southern France. Herald Nix's landscape paintings also pay homage to such notable artists as Constable, Turner, and Tom Thomson, in their desire to capture the sublime and the ineffable beauty of nature.
Herald Nix also produces magnificent abstract paintings that are painted on wood panels covered with thin veils of fabric, creating textures suggestive of amorphous forms and movement. These mini-colour field paintings are distillations of the essence of landscape: its shape, light, colour and atmospheric conditions. Hypnotizing in their subtle beauty, these intimate works lull the viewer into soulful contemplation.
These paintings are not to be missed!
