With the Leighton Art Centre fields in full bloom, we are excited to present The Iconic Alberta Rose, an exhibition of paintings, drawings and artifacts exploring the floral emblem of Alberta.
Artists Cindy Barratt and Susan Casualt combine art forms to capture what makes this plant so meaningful for Albertans, drawing inspiration from their personal connection with the Alberta Rose, and their love of the Alberta wilderness.
From forests, meadows, fields and lakesides to ditches and road ways, the Alberta Wild Rose is a hardy and prickly, yet beautiful delicate rose, able to thrive in a multitude of habitats. The first buds and new blossoms are intense with rich pink colours and unmistakable rose scent. The spring sun, time, and elements bring changes to the flowers as the petals crinkle, the rose gets lighter with age, and a handsome spray of leaves form beneath the delicate fragrant blossoms. In the fall, the plant’s rose hip fruits, and fabulous foliage make for a display as impressive as the summer blossoms, attracting birds, animals, and people to gather food or medicine.
