NICOLE LIAO "AGAINST THE DAY"
"Against the Day" will be an installation composed of drawings, photographs, models, and videos based on found footage of nuclear bomb tests in outer space. This Cold War
experiment resulted in an artificial extension of earth’s magnetosphere, creating stunning atmospheric lights over Honolulu in its wake. The light show as a result of these bombs replicated the Aurora Borealis – something that has long occurred naturally over the Arctic Circle. In this doubling of the Aurora, the line between the natural and the artificial begins to waver in light of the scale and impact of technology; catastrophic natural disasters are no longer simply “acts of god”, but integrally tied to human activity. Taking cues from literary strategies of historiography and science fiction, Liao will also create diagrams and charts to draw parallels between cosmic phenomena and man-made events.
