Unchained Melodies features the work of multi-media artist Janet Patterson and highlights how deeply music and memory are linked.
“I think for many of us, a piece of music can with such clarity and immediacy take us back to an earlier time or place in our lives,” Patterson says. “I wanted to create a body of work that pays homage to the music that impacted me in some way when I was growing up, and left me with enduring memories.”
“Take for example the song Unchained Melody. It was always played before the movies at the drive-in theatre I went to as a kid. Because of that, I strongly associate it with my childhood summers growing up in Nova Scotia,” Patterson adds. “The piece I made that relates to this song ended up being the ‘title cut’ so to speak of the show.”
Patterson’s collection is based on a wide range of music – everything from the opening theme to the children’s television show The Friendly Giant to Donny Osmond’s Puppy Love to Roxy Music’s In Every Dream Home a Heart Ache.
Patterson has LPs that include most of the featured music, and anyone coming to see the show is invited to play the records on a small turntable while they view the exhibit.
Note that this show includes some adult themes and may not be suitable for all children.
