Janet Shaw-Russell examines the desire for permanence in an ephemeral world. Her current focus is the art of aging.
With graphite or coloured pencils in hand, Janet draws on the translucent membrane of vellum or the delicate tissue of sewing patterns. Home and the body are metaphors for fragility and resilience.
Her multi-media art practise includes drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Janet works from her 1906 heritage home in Brandon. She has lived in south-western Manitoba since 1983.
Her work has been exhibited at venues throughout Manitoba including the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, Martha Street Studio and the Wasagaming Community Arts Centre. Her current show at Mennonite Heritage Centre Gallery will be followed by an exhibition at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum in 2020.
Janet is a founder of the women’s art collective, Drawn Together, a Manitoba Arts Council Creation Grant recipient, a Brandon Arts Council Grant recipient and a MAWA Mentorship mentee.
