Huaca is a South American term that refers to a location or object that is revered. In Huaca: Spirit of Place Janet has sought to reflect a sense of huaca as felt in the natural world. Ancient Andean culture believed huaca to be a spirit that can exist in natural formations like waterfalls, mountains and shrines.
“In places with huaca, a sense of wonder prevails and animates the world -- if only for a moment... It arrests you, draws you in and fires your imagination long afterward,” says Janet about her experiences.
Janet experienced the power of huaca while living in South America and felt first-hand places vibrating with significance or spirit. While Janet uses a range of styles in her artwork, the underlying current in her work focuses on moments of physical and psychological transformation.
