The Kube proudly presents the third solo exhibition by Filipino-Canadian artist Jay Cabalu, Bunso. Derived from a Tagalog term of endearment for the “youngest child” in a family, this exhibition uncovers the insidious implications of a youth-obsessed culture that stagnates maturity within an outdated patriarchal system.
Cabalu employs his signature hand-cut collage mashups to examine the violent consequences of such messaging using magazine images that fuel these fear-based motivations. These 7 new works depict a petrified Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, assault rifles, and still life settings infested with glistening commercial goods and logos. Expanding his visual language, Cabalu’s works venture into 3-dimensional collage and incorporate vintage Canadian stamps, Remembrance Day poppies, cubic zirconia jewelry and iridescent product packaging.
