Jaymie Johnson is an artist in residence visiting from Vancouver, BC who received her BFA from Emily Carr University. During her stay at the Caetani Centre, Johnson will be focusing on creating a community engaged, semi-permanent outdoor installation, with an educational and ecological legacy within the community. Johnson uses a variety of media to explore the connection between art, ecology, and community. These include printmaking, mapping, drawing, sculpture, and plant and earth materials through fiber processing and community engagement. Her background includes studies in permaculture and sustainable agriculture both globally and locally.
Johnson will be hosting a free communal weaving workshop on October 15th from 2:30-5pm at the Caetani Centre. Using local plant material, the public is invited to learn to make cordage that will become part of an eco-art installation inspired by weavings and webs found in nature. She will demonstrate how to use fibers such as stinging nettle, daylily, corn husk, and more.
As part of her residency, Johnson will be hosting her exhibition titled: “Plants and Plastic: Seeking Comfort in the Age of Anthropocene” at the Caetani Centre Studio Gallery from October 23rd-29th. The public is welcome to attend the opening reception on October 23rd from 7-9pm. She will also give a short talk during the reception, discussing her past work and present projects. This event is free and open to the public.
Johnson is part of the Fresh!AIR residency program. The Caetani Cultural Centre and the Allan Brooks Nature Centre have partnered to create a themed program which centers on nature, culture, science, environment, conservation and social issues. The collaboration is intended to serve as a catalyst in broadening and enriching community awareness and the understanding of art and sustainable biodiversity. Applications for all 2018 residencies are now open and available online.
