Calgary based artist Jeremy Pavka explores the still life genre through the creation of GIFS (Graphics Interchange Format). During the course of the exhibition six looping GIFS created through a combination of analogue and digital technologies will be shown — one per week. In the production of his work Pavka creates hand made sets, uses studio style lighting, and carefully considers the framing of each work. This lengthy process he endures captures half a second of original content where he then edits it endlessly into a digital loop.
"The punch line: each film’s runtime is as long as you want. The still life as a genre can be considered degenerate, simple, and lost in traditions. Comparably, digital art to the same critic exists as fad, kitsch, or nouveau riche categorizing it too as a simple style of art making - but to them I say: “do not fear the digital zeitgeist, you’ve had your fun, now go home.” - Pavka
