Jim Visser immigrated from Holland to Canada as a child, after the second world war. His family farmed near Edmonton. In 1999 Jim retired from producing seed potatoes to paint full time. From 1975 to the early 1990’s, he studied drawing, printmaking, watercolour and oil painting at the U of A, Faculty of Extension. His uplifting work hangs in the Cross Cancer Institute and the new Kaye Clinic; and his work has hangs in corporate and public collections. His work has been exhibited in over 35 group and solo shows in Edmonton, Red Deer, St. Albert and Stony Plain.
“Once again I enter the spaces of Alberta with its vast ever-changing skies and landscapes. My painting is my perception of light and space, of time and place. I am drawn to the unencumbered regions of the environment, the sky as it meets the horizon, and the canopy dance over the firmament. My desire is to evoke the spirituality of the earth and the Creator’s ever-moving gift of light. I attempt my interpretation of our prairies, rivers, lakes and mountains to express changing moods evoked by the entrance of the light and the drama of the sky. Each day our Maker gives us the gift of light into the offsetting dark. My visual voice is a desire to celebrate the magnificence of this light as it illuminates the moments of our lives on the beautiful earth.” ~ Jim Visser
