Joane Cardinal-Schubert (1942 – 2009) was an artist, curator, and activist whose body of work addressed Indigenous experiences, the deep struggle for cultural autonomy and her personal history as an Indigenous woman in modern day Canada. Cardinal-Schubert drew upon autobiographical references, the history of Western Colonialism and art history in a career that spanned over four decades. She received many accolades, including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in 2005, and in 2018, the opening of Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.
