The touring exhibition John Kissick: The Boom Bits features paintings and prints from the last five years in the abstract painter's critically acclaimed practice. The survey of works traces the artist's recent development of hybrid pictorial motifs and art historical references through the lenses of contemporary pop culture, surrealism and formal abstraction.
Known primarily as a painter and writer, John has an extensive exhibition record, with over 30 solo exhibitions in Canada, the US, and Germany. He received a BFA from Queen’s University and an MFA from Cornell University and has held academic appointments at the University of Guelph (where he currently teaches), Ontario College of Art + Design, Penn State University and The University of Ulster at Belfast. His work has also been featured in important survey exhibitions on contemporary painting, and is held in numerous public collections.
The exhibition was organized by the Thames Art Gallery and curated by Carl Lavoy, in collaboration with the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery, Esplanade Art Gallery (Medicine Hat, AB), Art Gallery of Guelph and the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (Sarnia, ON).
