John Procter was born and raised in East Vancouver. He was the first Easter baby born at 12:01am on March 26, 1948. His mom was given a free baby carriage from the hospital to commemorate the occasion. Went to Templeton High School, and tried Simon Fraser for a semester and decided it wasn't for him. John has lived a blue collar life, doing what needs to be done to get by, as well as creating masterful collages, mobiles, and paintings, which was his real life passion.
Being a self taught artist, John picked up art making skills throughout his life. And because money was usually scarce, John has never afforded himself the luxury to paint on canvas but rather inexpensive or found materials. Whatever the materials may be, John's finished work is made with impeccable details and craftsmanship.
John's work can be very reminiscent of Alexander Calder in his mobiles because of their elegant use of organic shapes, balance, and colors. His collages have the precision and complexity of Hannah Hoch. John's artwork is not without influence as he is well read and keeps himself informed on who has come before him.
John's work is a pleasant escape from the regular day to day. This exhibition will slap you in the face with the colour and fantastical joy you need right now!
