In the exhibition I Must Be Streaming, Jorden Doody investigates how contemporary culture responds to notions of the body in a digital age where illusion, escape, and distraction are at the forefront of our collective consciousness. Our expanded communities are continually being challenged through the exponential growth and impact of digital technology and social media.
In I Must Be Streaming, Jorden Doody challenges the viewer to acknowledge the world they live in relation to the digital realm in which they participate. Doody mixes new media technologies such as digital printing, contemporary materials like faux fur and vinyl, with traditional modes of craft like weaving, felting, and mural painting to explore notions of ‘reality’. In this distorted world of oversized objects, visitors are invited to reflect on their own concepts of connectivity and consider the impacts these have on our relationships and our daily lives.
By utilizing new media technologies in combination with traditional modes of craft, Doody’s installations blur the boundaries between the real and the virtual, the tactile and the imaginary. For example, in Virtually Empty, comprised of three components—an image of an empty window screen, a digitized needlepoint clown, and a plain white ironing board—a surreal space is created that carries the viewer back and forth across the object/image divide.
Jorden Doody is an interdisciplinary artist who examines the transitional spaces between tangible material and digital media. She is based in Kelowna and is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of British Columbia Okanagan.
