Newzones Gallery is pleased to announce Reflections and Recollections, a solo exhibition of new work by Toronto-based contemporary photographer, Joshua Jensen-Nagle, known globally for his dreamy large-scale photographs created to capture a feeling.
As part of the Art Dealers Association of Canada's Art Hop, Jensen-Nagle will be joining Newzones for the opening of his exhibition on May 3rd from 1-3pm, with an artist talk at 1:30pm.
Jensen-Nagle’s series "Endless Summer", seeks to capture the timeless, evocative essence of the beach – a place where memories are made, and where the passage of time feels suspended. Titled, "Reflections and Recollections", this exhibition is an exploration of individuals hold onto memories, how they shape identity, and how they continue to resonate long after the moment has passed. Through the lens of nostalgia, the beach becomes a symbol of both personal and collective reflection.
Through this body of work, Jensen-Nagle focuses on the quiet interplay between light, form, and movement – moments where the past and present merge, creating a space for contemplation. The figures in these photographs are often abstracted, blending into their surroundings as if they are not only participants in the scene, but also part of the memory itself. Their silhouettes dissolve into the composition, emphasizing the fluidity of time and the impermanence of the present moment.
Each image is furthermore an invitation to reflect on how we interact with time – how we experience the world around us, often through the lens of what we’ve already lived. With these images, Jensen-Nagle aims to evoke a sense of longing, a recognition of the beauty in what was, and a deeper connection to the memories that live on in our hearts and minds.
The act of remembering is central to the work. As the subjects move through the sand, under the sun, or near the water, they are caught in a timeless state – both here and there, past and present.
For the series "Endless Summer", Jensen-Nagle has travelled to over 20 countries and 5 continents capturing his sought-after beachscapes, often hanging out of helicopters for birds-eye views. His immersive, cinematic photos are intended to evoke emotion rather than simply document places. He invites viewers to lose themselves within the work, encouraging them to reflect on their own experiences, dreams, and memories.
Over the past 20 years, his work has been placed in numerous private and corporate collections including Microsoft, Maple Leaf, Master Card International, Four Seasons, Target, Transcontinental and Hilton Hotels, and has been featured in a variety of publications including Art in America, Canadian Art, Globe and Mail, Toronto Life, House and Home, Fashion and Elle Canada. Highlighted art fair presence includes Photo London, Art Toronto, Art Miami, Scope Miami, Art Palm Beach, Art New York, Art Chicago, and San Francisco Art Fair.
