“Atkinson explains that through her work she is responding to a current“call to women rising” by “invoking Athena’s archetypical energy.” Bylooking to the past, Atkinson reimagines a warrior symbol for the empowerment of women today
Throughout her career, painter Judith M. Atkinson has been captivated by the ancient Western world and themes of feminine empowerment, mystical journeys and mythological figures. Her experiences with antiquity, heightened by recent ravels to significant archaeological sites such as Delphi, the Parthenon and ruins in Sicily, are brought into her paintings, both abstract and representational. In her newest body of work, Atkinson dives deeply into a painterly exploration of sacred sites, the cosmos and Greek mythology to create a large-scale installation environment designed specifically for the Art Gallery at Evergreen, complemented by a soundscape composed by Joël Tibbits.
Judith M. Atkinson is an artist whose work ranges from painting, to assemblage sculpture with non- traditional materials, to installation works with sound and dance performances.
