Opening Reception: Saturday, February 17 from noon to 4 pm. The artist will be in attendance.
THIS Gallery will host The Way I See It, a new solo exhibition by exceptional visual/tattoo artist and illustrator, Katie So, aka ghostmeadow.
Katie So frequently absorbs diverse visual stimuli as a crucial part of their creative process. They engage in walks and outdoor experiences, immersing themselves in the environment with heightened attention to detail. This interaction serves as a form of nourishment, essential for their ability to concentrate.
Manifesting this sensory-seeking behaviour, The Way I See It revolves around a floral and botanical realm, seamlessly incorporating abstract forms and kinetic mark-making. The deliberate choice of a monochromatic palette mirrors the artist's heightened visual sensitivity to light. Beyond being a mere artistic endeavour, these paintings take on the role of a sensory soothing exercise during their creation, striving to articulate not only the artist's perspective but also to convey the unique experience of their visual world.
“The paintings included in this exhibition are large, dynamic and strikingly beautiful. They consist of tight crops of delicate floral arrangements” says gallery owner, Shannon Pawliw. “The brushstrokes are loose and free, creating a vivid graphic detail of a captured moment.”
Artist Bio
Katie So was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. A first-generation Canadian, growing up bi-racial with autism, Katie has used this experience of existing between worlds to inform her work which delves into themes of racial identity, mental health and perception of self.
Drawing on their acute sensitivity to sensory stimuli, So captures the essence of fleeting moments, infusing their practice with a keen sense of nostalgia and emotional depth. Their work serves as a poignant reflection on the subtleties of daily life, depicting snapshots of sensory impressions and the nuanced emotions tied to ephemeral memories.
So has showcased work in North America and Europe, and continues to diversify their studio practice by attending local and international artist residencies.
