Kayla Eykelboom is a self-taught contemporary landscape artist raised right here in Canmore, Alberta. She has a fiery love for the mountains and a passion for environmental conservation. Kayla has studied ecological sciences at the University of Alberta and has worked as a fisheries biologist for Banff National Park. She has been painting unstoppably since 2007.
Kayla works in the acrylic medium typically completing her works on thick edge canvas. You can expect to see a vibrancy in her work that amplifies the natural beauty of landscapes in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Painting specifically mountains she has climbed, worked around, or simply photographed in passing, Kayla’s goal is to evoke a sense of awe and celebration to the viewer, inspiring those who experience her work to seek out mountain adventures of their own. Kayla also aims to shed light on conservation issues through her work, often creating collections embodying specific ecological relationships, phenomena and current research.
Kayla’s style is constantly growing with her, but elements that will remain recognizable in her work include vibrant tones, softly blended gradients, and an overall interplay between precise detail and fluid landscape components.
“My goal with painting, along with achieving the sheer personal enjoyment and peace that creating brings me, is to inspire those in my community to live their best lives in the mountains. To me, the celebration of local landscapes in the form of painting creates a platform for discussions about ecological conservation, human adventure and responsible outdoor recreation. I wholeheartedly wish for all people to care for Canadian landscapes and their unique ecosystems for generations to come, so that the landscapes I choose to share on canvas remain vibrant in reality.”
