Leah Pipe: The Trembling Heart
The Powerful Magic of Portraiture
Leah Pipe doesn’t consider herself a wildlife painter, but rather a portraitist capturing the likeness and the character of the figures she paints. In her newest series, The Trembling Heart, Leah is reaching for the strength, emotions and lessons that can be pulled from these images. In one instance it is the quietude of an owl overlooking the forest, while in another the intent gaze of a raven seems to ask us to observe both our external and interior worlds. A portrait of a wolf conjures the idea of watchfulness, while the sharp-eyed hawk looks over its shoulder, suggesting reflection on the past.
As Leah Pipe has written, “A portrait invites us to stand alone in front of it, to connect poetically and viscerally with it and to search within ourselves to find the very similar elements we observe within its face.”
