Lincoln Clarkes, 'Window Glance,' Sicily, 2022, LightJet Print (2025)
Clarkes career in photography spans decades, and includes assignments for magazines, music, cinema, books and galleries. His signature genre is portraiture, and style often candidly composed, and many of his works reflect the influence of this approach on his practice
Here and There focuses on the photographs made while travelling and working in Italy, England and Canada. He has personal and professional ties to these three countries, and they in turn have been critical in forming his artistic sensibility. Clarkes structures the experience of each place through his ability to create a series of photographic impressions that stand alone as individual images, while creating an undeniable narrative feel when read together.
The photos in this exhibition, all produced since 2000, reflect Clarkes empathetic engagement with the human experience, and demonstrate how an individual’s style, personality and attitude are determined by their physical and social environment. It is Clarkes ability to enter into these places and engage with those who occupy them in a curious yet respectful way that gives these work their power, resonance, and veracity.
