Linda Duvall: In the Hole
In the Hole is a short-term art residency located in an earthen hole on Treaty 6 territory in rural Saskatchewan, Canada. People from across Canada as well as US and Europe are coming to spend 6 hours with artist/organizer Linda Duvall, and a video camera. This series of 6-hour blocks will transpire regardless of wind, sun, rain, hail, or non-human visitors.
Each participant proposed a general direction or way of thinking about being in such an environment for 6 hours. The proposals ranged from sitting quietly for the entire time, to singing or composing in the space, to connecting to the history of living in holes in the early years of white settlement in the prairies. Some participants are most interested in the shifting weather conditions that will happen within a 6-hour block, others are more concerned with the diverse ecology that surrounds the hole. Some will directly address the implications of spending time in a patch of never-tilled prairie on Treaty 6 land, and what that means in the 21st century, through apologies, readings, discussion, and/or meditation. Others are aware of the duality that such a space offers – shelter and isolation, being both seen and unseen, a place to hide things, a place to hide yourself, the possibility to discover something in a dug hole.
Each six hour bloc will be projected with sound into the PAVED Arts gallery, set into an installation about the project by Linda Duvall. In the Hole will feature up to forty different participants and change on a daily basis for the entire run of the exhibition: May 5 to June 30, 2017.
