The University of Saskatchewan College Art Galleries present a complex survey of works by artist Lori Blondeau: an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in performance and photography. Blondeau is a Cree/Saulteaux/Metis and is a member of the George Gordon First Nation in Saskatchewan. She holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan and apprenticed with James Luna from 1998-2001.
In addition to her extensive exhibition history, Blondeau is a co-founder of the Indigenous artist collective, TRIBE Inc. She has exhibited and performed nationally and internationally including at the Banff Centre; Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Open Space, Victoria; and FOFA, Montreal. In 2007, Blondeau was part of The Requickening Project with artist Shelly Niro at the Venice Biennale, and recently had a solo exhibition at Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery, Winnipeg. Selections from her extensive body of work comprise Lori Blondeau: A Survey, celebrating her continued impact and influence on Canadian contemporary art.
Curated by Leah Taylor
"My work explores the influence of popular media and culture (contemporary and historical) on Aboriginal self-identity, self-image, and self-definition... I deconstruct the images of the Indian Princess and the Squaw and reconstruct an image of absurdity, inserting these hybrids into the mainstream. The performance personas I have created refer to the damage of colonialism and to the ironic pleasures of displacement and resistance.”
