In an age of immediacy, Lori Lukasewich slows things down with her intimate oil paintings of domestic objects. While clearly influenced by Realism and techniques of the old Masters, her work owes more of a debt to the practice of meditation. Whether it’s a porcelain figurine or silver tea set, each painting becomes an exercise in focus and stillness, a lesson in seeing. The resulting paintings are reflections on perception and value, particularly on domesticity and the woman’s role in creating a home. In the tradition of the late painter Mary Pratt, Lukasewich is shining a light on the beauty of everyday home life as “a common and necessary antidote to the difficulties of everyday life”.

Lori Lukasewich is a Calgary-based artist who has been painting and exhibiting since 1984. She was educated at the Alberta College of Art and has used her skills broadly in the areas of graphic arts, visual presentation, film and television, jewellery and furniture design, decorative and faux painting, palaeontological restoration, and children’s literature and illustration. She has been teaching painting for nearly 20 years, much of that time in the Extended Studies program at ACAD. Her work can be found in many public and private collections.
