Mark Mullin - sticks and stones
to
Paul Kuhn Gallery 724 11 Ave SW, Calgary, Alberta T2R 0E4
Opening Saturday, September 9, 2017 - Artist in Attendance
Paul Kuhn Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Calgary artist, Mark Mullin. The show’s title, “sticks and stones”, includes both large scale paintings and for the first time, smaller scale paintings on paper.
The exhibition will run through early October and the artist will attend the opening.
Mullin’s own words best describe this new exhibition:
After analyzing the visual devices of my past works, I felt compelled to takea less polished and refined approach. The question was, how will the works resonate if I manipulated my language towards a more blunt and rudimentary state. I became excited to make paintings that are left at a stage of playful awkwardness. The paintings contain passages that are intentionally immediate one-shot entities that buttress passages that are repeatedly scrubbed and erased. The works on paper present to me the freedom to work more quickly and form dialogues that are deliberately contradictory. This new body of work shifts away from the elegance of manicured instruments to the honesty of “sticks and stones”.
