Local artist Marlene Kallstrom-Barritt uses bubbles that express feelings of gratitude in her exhibit Ascending!
With “bubbles” of all sizes scattered across her paintings, Marlene Kallstrom-Barritt’s exhibit Ascending is like seeing the world through champagne-coloured glasses. The works offer a sense of celebration, with the bubbles representing gratitude – from the artist and even from the landscapes themselves – ascending to the Creator above. The concept was inspired by Isaiah 55:12: “the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”
The landscapes are mixed media of watercolour and ink, allowing Kallstrom-Barritt to combine loosely painted images with carefully controlled drawing. She calls the process Abstract Realism, for its blend of abstract qualities with realistic representation.
Marlene writes in her artist statement, “Sometimes I wonder if the various elements in the landscape have more faith and are more thankful when we, as humans, may not be. So then, I try (and in our current times it is not so easy) to be thankful and focus on whatever is lovely and admirable, noble and right. There have been many times in my life where I needed more joy or peace, so it is my hope that my artwork will now add a little spark of joy or peace to someone’s else’s day.”
